MONZA CONCEPT BREAKS COVER AT FRANKFURT
  • Monza Concept previews future Opel/Vauxhall design strategy
  • Efficient use of space, lightweight design and innovative powertrains
  • Revolutionary infotainment with LED projection technology
Opel/Vauxhall’s ground-breaking Monza Concept, the first car to feature cutting-edge LED projection infotainment and an evolution of the Ampera’s revolutionary powertrain, is world premiering at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

“The Monza Concept represents the Opel/Vauxhall car of tomorrow”, said Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, Opel/Vauxhall CEO. “On one hand, it embodies everything that already characterises Opel/Vauxhall – precision engineering combined with innovative technologies wrapped in captivating design. In addition, it addresses the themes that will be the development-focus of the next generation of Opel/Vauxhall cars: maximum connectivity and optimum efficiency.”

“Connectivity is demonstrated by a trailblazing LED projection technology for instrument and infotainment displays. Efficiency comes in many ways, with lightweight design, optimal use of interior space, and advanced powertrain technology. The Monza Concept is based on increasing electrification of the automobile in everyday driving, from range-extender to fuel cell. And as far as styling is concerned, we are expressing pure efficiency in a new, lean and athletic interpretation of our typical sculptural shapes. The Monza Concept is nothing less than our vision of the automotive future.”

Design

The original Monza made its world premiere at the IAA back in 1977 for Vauxhall’s sister company Opel: it was a large coupé with a silky smooth-running six-cylinder engine. It went into production as the Vauxhall Royale in the UK, and was sold until 1982.

The new Monza Concept has a beautifully shaped bonnet with the distinctive centre fold continues the tradition of the Monza front with the typical Vauxhall crease. The large boomerang-shaped air intakes in front of the wheel arches complement the elegant chrome bar that holds the Griffin badge.

With the Monza Concept, the designers in Brit, Mark Adams’ team introduce a new interpretation of the sculptural design that first went into production with the Insignia. Distinctive lines, high-precision design and perfect sweeping contours remain the core of the evolving design philosophy.

But a new, athletic allure demonstrates the car’s overall efficiency. “This is the next bold step along our journey into the future, but at the same time we show that we have established a consistent design in which people can build trust”, said Mark Adams, Head of Opel/Vauxhall Design.

The sculptural surfaces of the 4.69 metre-long, four seat Monza Concept are modelled after ocean waves lapping on the shore. These flowing surfaces give a look of lightness, dramatically underlined by the side-sills that taper off in front of the rear wheel arches. This unique styling element is inspired by the lean physique and slim waist of a greyhound dog, running as if on tip-toes with powerful elegance. The design of the Monza Concept’s body sides enables easy entry and egress for front and rear-seat passengers, while underscoring the prominent, sporty rear wheel arches, which share the same width as those at the front.

The Monza Concept’s roof line is particularly sophisticated. At first it runs in a semi-circular form like a classic coupé’s, but then just before reaching the tailgate it sweeps slightly upwards. In spite of its sporty look and flat silhouette with a height of just 1.31 metres, there is neither loss of space in the luggage compartment – 500 litres in volume – nor constrained headroom for the passengers. This is due to the fact that the whole cockpit structure is around 15 centimeters lower than in conventional models. The Monza Concept offers the same airy passenger compartment as a mid-size car.

The expansive doors provide maximum functionality with spectacular views when opening. They swing up like the outstretched wings of a condor and offer an unobstructed view of the spacious, open passenger cabin (or the surroundings from the inside) thanks to the absence of a B-pillar.

Futuristic Connectivity

Efficiency and connectivity are the main focus for development in the next generation of Vauxhall cars. The Monza Concept offers a fascinating preview of these developments. Once behind the wheel, the Monza Concept whisks you away into a completely new and unique world of instruments and infotainment.

The Monza Concept continues innovating with state-of-the-art LED projection technology. Drivers no longer find the conventional individual, separate monitors that display different information; instead, they face a wide, sculpted dashboard that sweeps from door to door, and is used as a single projection surface. Information and decorative elements are displayed on the surface, which the driver can customise according to his needs, taste or mood.

A total of 18 LED projectors create a continuous, adaptable multi-functional display – the first car in the world to feature this. Already established in the events arena, this technology has caused a sensation at major occasions such as the Queen’s Jubilee, and Opel/Vauxhall designers were first to think of implementing it in a passenger car. The 3D graphics are impressive, and reflect all important functions from precise vehicle and driver information to internet and communication options as well as decorative elements. Both the area displaying information and the background can be individually configured, and operation is via voice control and steering wheel controls.

Efficiency and clarity are also priorities here: when it came to how the displays present information, Opel/Vauxhall engineers focused on the best and most personal way to make relevant data available to the driver. The approach was “simplifying the multitude” and so details on the car, the navigation and the smartphone settings and connection only appear when necessary or desired. So drivers can use a wide range of information without being overwhelmed by text or images. This also makes the Monza Concept a model of future Human-Machine-Interface (HMI) systems, as its interior design is based on latest research findings in this field.

This also applies to the comprehensive smartphone connectivity in the Monza Concept. With three worlds of connectivity – called ME, US and ALL – drivers can focus solely on their driving experience, or get in touch with friends and family or even connect to the whole internet community. With ME the infotainment system virtually disconnects the drivers’ smartphone and prioritises the information relevant for the driving experience. US enables the passengers of the Monza Concept to connect with a group of selected people such as friends and family members: these can log-in to the car’s infotainment system with their own communication device and exchange information, music and images, chat and make appointments, etc. ALL goes beyond US. It allows the driver and virtually the whole outside world to connect. Drivers can for example spontaneously share their planned route online over a tablet or smartphone so that people can catch a ride with them along the way – enabling a new kind of instant car-sharing. With this trailblazing infotainment and connectivity technology, the Monza Concept shows how far ahead Opel/Vauxhall’s designers and engineers are thinking, so that the next generation of cars make their contribution to a harmonious, connected society.

The trendsetting sensor and connectivity technology in the Monza Concept has even more to offer: it gives a preview of the advancements in “Car-to-Car” and “Car-to-X” systems – prerequisites for future autonomous driving and areas in which the research department at Opel/Vauxhall is already intensively working. By comprehensively connecting road users, intercommunication can be enhanced, as can safety, because dangerous traffic situations are registered earlier and more accurately than before.

Powertrain Flexibility

The Monza Concept is based on a modular design to allow highest-possible flexibility when selecting a propulsion system. A variety of sustainable powertrains based on increasing electrification of the automobile are available. For the Monza Concept set to be displayed at Frankfurt, engineers conceived an electric drive with a CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) range extender – a further development of the Ampera’s pioneering technology. The new-generation three-cylinder 1.0 SIDI turbo – which also makes its premiere at Frankfurt – takes over the task as range extender. But it does so with natural gas instead of petrol, further improving the car’s CO2 footprint. With its visionary approach, Opel/Vauxhall continues to combine the potential of electric propulsion with the benefits of the internal combustion engine.

“We have a clear vision of how Opel/Vauxhall cars will be in the future, and we have a clear strategy of how we will achieve this goal. The Monza Concept gives this strategy an unmistakable identity,” said Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann. “It embodies what our customers can expect from us within the next years, not only in terms of design, but also in terms of efficiency and connectivity between drivers and the internet community. So it already anticipates future everyday automotive life, and serves as an important source of inspiration on the road to that destination.”

Existing diesel units have also benefited from refinement improvements.

An all-new infotainment system, incorporating Bluetooth-operated internet connectivity, an 8-inch touchscreen, and 3D navigation and voice control, is fully compatible with a driver’s smartphone and allows drivers unrivalled communications while on the move. A DMB (Digital Media Broadcast) radio is now standard across the range

Since its launch in 2008, the Insignia has largely dominated the mid-size sector and launched the eye-catching design philosophy that has permeated through all subsequent new Vauxhalls. The Insignia’s classic exterior lines remain for the new range, with only subtle enhancements made to its styling, but inside there are important changes to the car’s instrument cluster and centre console design, as well as improvements to its control-functionality.

The Insignia’s range has been simplified, too. There are now eight trims (down from 14 in the outgoing line-up), ranging from Design to Elite, with a mixture of new models that will appeal to both retail and fleet buyers. And like all Vauxhalls, the New Insignia range will come with Lifetime Warranty, allowing first owners peace of mind for as long as they own the car, up to 100,000 miles.

‘Our flagship car is coming of age,’ said Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall’s Chairman and Managing Director. ‘The new Insignia range embodies all that Vauxhall stands for: powerful design, innovative technology, terrific value and driving pleasure. The Insignia’s become a design classic in its class, and I’m confident that the new range will appeal to both existing customers as well as those who would never have considered buying a Vauxhall before.’

New Powertrains & Chassis Enhancements

Across the New Insignia range, there have been improvements to the car’s ride and handling. Damper and anti-roll bar settings have been revised for better ride and control, while the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system standard in all but the VXR models has been reprogrammed for improved feel. Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) levels have also been reduced for enhanced occupant comfort.

The New Insignia range’s powertrain line-up has been broadened still further with the addition of an all-new petrol engine and new derivatives of the existing 2.0 CDTi unit.

Now available with a choice of three power outputs – 120PS, 140PS and 163PS – the New Insignia range’s 2.0 CDTi engine offers drivers ultra-low C02 emissions of 99g/km (76.3mpg combined) for the lower two outputs and 114g/km (65.7mpg combined) for the higher output unit (figures for Hatch models). But performance hasn’t been compromised, with even the 120 and 140PS models producing up to 320 and 370Nm of torque respectively, and the 163PS model up to 380Nm.

For company car drivers, the new diesel engines offer an even more compelling argument, with both the 120 and 140PS ecoFLEX Hatch versions emitting just 99g/km of C02 and dipping in to the 14 per cent Benefit-in-Kind category for the 2013/14 Tax Year.

Also new to the engine line-up are two direct injection petrol units: the new-generation 1.6-litre SIDI (Spark Ignition Direct Injection) producing 170PS/280Nm that recently launched in the 2013 Cascada convertible, and the 2.0-litre SIDI, producing 250PS/400Nm. Both engines provide an exceptional mix of refinement, economy and performance. They can be coupled with a six-speed manual transmission and Start/Stop function, or with a new, low-friction six-speed automatic gearbox.

Interior Design and Infotainment

The biggest change existing Insignia customers will see when they sit in the new car is a completely re-designed centre console and instrument cluster. The centre console has been simplified and now has fewer buttons for more intuitive operation of common functions, such as air conditioning and infotainment, while the instrument cluster has new dials and a fresh, high-tech look.

Optional across the range is an 8-inch screen infotainment display (up from 5-inches in the outgoing range) and a new, upgraded instrument cluster with an 8-inch, high-resolution colour display. The cluster incorporates two outer dials showing fuel and revs, while in the centre sits a speedometer that can be displayed in analogue or digital form, or changed to show functions such as smartphone or audio use, or navigation.

The 8-inch infotainment display has touch-screen functionality, allowing drivers to access all functions and sub-menus such as radio stations, song titles, smartphone connection or 3D navigation in an intuitive and safe way. Its illuminated, touch-sensitive surface reacts immediately to finger movements, with even individual letters and numbers being accessible via this method. Up to 60 favourite menus can be stored from all functions and Apps can also be downloaded via the car’s Bluetooth-connected internet.

In addition to button, touchscreen and touchpad operation, Insignia drivers can also control the infotainment system via re-designed controls on the new-look steering wheel. The advanced voice recognition function can also be operated by a single push of a button on the steering wheel.

Stylish new leather and cloth trims are available in the New Insignia range, complemented by upgraded dashboard materials and decors.

Exterior Design & Technology

With 40 industry awards to its name – including the coveted European Car of the Year in 2009 – the outgoing Insignia has earned respect from media and customers alike. One of the pillars of its success has been its premium design – we called it ‘sculptural artistry meets technical precision’ at launch – and with the new range this has been enhanced still further.

Starting at the front of the car, the high-gloss chrome grille is wider and lower than before. The logo-bar that cradles the Griffin badge is thinner and includes winglets that link with the re-designed headlamps. On Elite models, these feature bi-xenon lamps with AFL (Advanced Forward Lighting), which is optional on all other models.

Standard headlamps are trimmed in high-gloss black with chrome-embedded accents, with the up-level AFL lights getting a ‘wing-signature’ daytime running light with energy-saving LEDs.

The lower front fascia inserts are designed to appear slim and wide to emphasise the upper grille size. Fog lamps are combined with wide, black inserts and chrome accents, which grow in width as they near the cabin.

In profile, the New Insignia range’s Hatch and Saloon models are better defined through their unique tailgates and rear spoilers. The crease line on the C-pillar of the Hatch fades out before it reaches the spoiler’s trailing edge, giving it a classis coupe silhouette. On the Saloon, the crease line continues along the edge of the spoiler to emphasise the body’s length.

At the rear, the New Insignia range models appear wider and lower. The high-gloss chrome logo bar has been positioned lower on the tailgate. It extends into the tail-lights and incorporates the slim-look reversing lamps. The tail and stop functions of the two-piece tail-lights are illuminated by LEDs throughout the range.

The New Insignia range offers a raft of technology, safety and comfort highlights. These include state-of-the-art radar- and camera-based assistance systems (including adaptive cruise control and second-generation park assist), premium seats, and ‘Open & Start’, the keyless entry and start system, to name just a few.

Two new exterior colours – Emerald Green and Aurum Green – join the exiting 10 colour choices.

Range

The New Insignia range comprises eight trim levels starting with Design, and going up to Elite. There are also two trims – Energy and Limited Edition – which package generous equipment levels popular with retail buyers. And a further two trims – Design and Tech Line – that package comprehensive levels of equipment for company car drivers.

All models have a long list of standard equipment, which includes:
  • DMB digital radio
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • USB connection and aux-in socket
  • CD/MP3 player & stereo radio
  • LED daytime running lights
  • Leather covered steering wheel

  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Electric Park Brake
  • Electronic climate control
  • Automatic lighting control
  • Electrically operated front windows
  • Electrically adjustable/heated door mirrors
  • Massive savings for company car drivers
The New Insignia range offers big savings over key competitors for company car drivers. Thanks to the new low CO2 engines, the Insignia Design 2.0 CDTi (120PS) ecoFLEX with Start/Stop saves company car drivers £992 in benefit-in-kind tax over a three-year period against a Ford Mondeo Edge 1.6 TDCi (115PS) and £1,118 over a Volkswagen Passat Bluemotion Tech S 1.6 TDI (105PS).

‘The New Insignia family not only offers refreshed styling, new engines and cutting-edge infotainment, but also big savings for company car drivers,’ said James Taylor, Vauxhall’s Fleet Sales Director. ‘Against key rivals such as the Ford Mondeo and the VW Passat, company car drivers can save over £1,000 in BiK tax as well as getting more standard equipment and better fuel economy.’

NEW 170MPH VAUXHALL TAKES BOW AT FRANKFURT

Insignia’s performance flagship benefits from latest revisions to new range

With a top speed of 170mph and power output of 325PS, the new Insignia VXR SuperSport remains the UK’s fastest car you can buy under £30,000.

Now benefiting from a raft of design and chassis revisions which have been made across the entire Insignia range, the new Insignia VXR SuperSport will receive its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show (September 12-22).

As before, the SuperSport is available as either a Hatch or Sports Tourer, but externally both models have received a re-styled front and rear, with signature VXR design elements such as distinctive ‘saber-tooth’ detailing at the front and the tailpipe trim integrated into the rear valence.

The SuperSport’s adaptive all-wheel-drive chassis has also been improved, with around 60 per cent of the car’s rear suspension components receiving revisions, while the car’s front HiPerStruts – which prevent geometry changes during hard cornering – remain an innovative feature in this class.

Complementing this, are modifications to the ESP software for even more precise handling and control of understeer, and upgrades to the damper software as part of the SuperSport’s FlexRide adaptive damping system.

In addition, NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) behaviour has been fine-tuned to achieve greater refinement for occupants, enhancing the SuperSport’s credentials as one of the UK’s best-value performance saloon cars.

With six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel-drive, the new Insignia VXR SuperSport reaches 60mph from zero in just 5.9 seconds (6.1 seconds for Sports Tourer) and on to a top speed of 170mph. Its drivetrain incorporates an electronically controlled 4x4 system, operating on Haldex principles and an electronic limited-slip differential. It constantly adapts to prevailing road conditions and varies torque distribution seamlessly between the front and rear axles, as well as between the rear wheels.

Other important changes to the Insignia VXR SuperSport range include an all-new instrument panel and central console design, which incorporates optional Bluetooth-operated internet connectivity, an 8-inch touchscreen, 3D navigation and voice control. DAB is standard across the SuperSport range.

The Insignia VXR SuperSport is available to order now, and starts at £29,749 OTR for the Hatch and £31,049 for the Sports Tourer.

VAUXHALL’S NEW COUNTRY TOURER MOVES INSIGNIA UPMARKET
  • Top-of-the-range Sports Tourer with SUV characteristics
  • Higher ground clearance and distinct protective body elements
  • Advanced all-wheel drive with variable torque delivery
  • Two powerful turbo-diesel engines with up to 400Nm torque
Vauxhall has added a rugged SUV-inspired all-purpose Tourer to its New Insignia range with its first public appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Known as the Insignia Country Tourer, and based on the Sports Tourer model, but with all-wheel drive, higher ground clearance and tougher styling, the new car will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Design

With its signature griffin grille, now wider and deeper, the front styling is distinctively Vauxhall. The grille’s horizontal chrome bar carries the central brand emblem and is sculpted in a wing form, with its outer tips turned upwards alongside the headlamps. A protective panel, in a gleaming silver finish, sweeps out from under the engine compartment; a prominent design theme echoed at the rear.

Another feature is the anthracite-coloured protective cladding on the side sills and lower body sections, which gives the wheel-arches a more pronounced, flared look.

A final visual flourish is provided by distinctive front and rear light units. The headlamps, with embedded chrome accents, incorporate wing-style LED daytime running lights. This theme is repeated at the rear, with LED brake and taillights.

Powertrains

State-of-the-art all-wheel drive is combined with two powerful turbo-diesel engines: a 2.0-litre BiTurbo CDTi, producing 195PS and 400Nm of torque, and a 2.0-litre CDTi with 165PS and up to 380Nm torque available. A choice of six-speed manual or a low-friction, six-speed automatic transmission is available on the 2.0-litre (165PS) diesel engine.  The 2.0-litre (195PS) BiTurbo diesel engine is available in automatic only.

The electronically controlled 4x4 drivetrain incorporates a high-quality clutch, operating on Haldex principles, and an electronic limited-slip differential to ensure superb traction on both paved and unpaved surfaces. It constantly adapts to the prevailing road conditions, and can vary torque distribution seamlessly between the front and rear axles, as well as between the rear wheels, even before a wheel begins to slip.

When necessary, the clutch controlling drive distribution immediately sends more torque to the rear axle. The 4x4 system’s sensors constantly feed individual control modules with information on yaw rate, acceleration, steering angle, wheel speed, throttle pedal position, engine speed and torque. The front/rear power distribution is constantly adapted to the driving situation based on this information.

Ultimate stability and higher dynamics are ensured by the electronically-controlled rear-axle Limited Slip Differential (eLSD). The eLSD controls the distribution of torque between the rear wheels, transferring drive torque to the wheel that has the most grip. While offering better traction in slippery conditions, the sophisticated operation of this adaptive 4x4 drive system guarantees the highest levels of driver control and active safety in all situations. The Insignia Country Tourer can even provide propulsion when three wheels are on loose or slippery ground and only one rear wheel has traction.

The adaptive all-wheel system also supports drivers in non-critical situations. To reduce frictional losses and save fuel, the system automatically reverts to front-wheel drive whenever it senses that no adaptive interventions are required.

Off road, the new Insignia Country Tourer also benefits from larger tyres and a raised ride height, in addition to its four-wheel drive traction. Ground clearance is 20mm higher than on a standard model, a major advantage when encountering loose, uneven terrain.

“The Insignia Country Tourer is perfect for a winter holiday, on snowy roads, or simply when the going gets tough,” said Stuart Harris, Vauxhall’s Head of Carline Brand.  “Even on urban roads its robust looks give it strong stand-out appeal.”

VAUXHALL ADAM’S NEW ENGINE GIVES A TRIPLE PUNCH
  • New 115PS 1.0-litre turbo raises bar for three-cylinder refinement
  • First in new family of small-displacement direct injection petrol engines
  • Higher torque than 1.6-litre engine
  • Cylinder head-integrated exhaust manifold
  • Teamed with new six-speed gearbox
  • 30 per cent lighter than predecessor
Vauxhall will unveil an all-new high-tech 1.0-litre three–cylinder petrol engine at the Frankfurt Motor Show, ahead of its debut in the ADAM city car next year.

The 1.0-litre turbo petrol, known as SGE (small gasoline engine), represents a new benchmark for refinement in three-cylinder engines, with noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) characteristics superior to many four cylinder units.

Developing 115PS, the pocket powerhouse delivers generous low-end torque of 166Nm all the way from 1,800 to 4,700rpm, belying its small size.

The 1.0-litre spark ignition direct injection (SIDI) turbo generates more torque throughout its operating range than equally powerful, higher displacement engines, while fuel efficiency is improved by 20 per cent compared with the current 1.6-litre naturally aspirated unit that powers the Astra.

Set to appear first in the stylish ADAM next year with an all-new six-speed gearbox, the 12-valve, 1.0-litre turbo is the first in a new, modular family of three and four-cylinder Vauxhall petrol engines up to 1.6-litres.

State-of-the-art technologies such as direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, and a lightweight aluminium cylinder-block, are key to the engine’s efficiency. Vauxhall expects the new engine family to deliver impressive fuel economy and CO2 emissions significantly lower than 100g/km.

“In developing this small engine, we not only set out minimise fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. We also wanted to demonstrate that three cylinders can be just as refined as four or more,” said Dr. Matthias Alt, Chief Engineer, Small Gasoline Engines. “We tackled at source the balance, noise and vibration issues typical of conventional three-cylinder engines, and we’re confident customers will be pleasantly surprised by the results. This is a very lively and refined three-cylinder engine which doesn’t compromise driving fun.”

Engineered for class-leading acoustics

Vauxhall engineers started with a clean sheet of paper, which enabled a series of measures to eliminate the typical, ‘off-beat’ running characteristics which have traditionally accompanied three-cylinder engines.

The die-cast aluminium cylinder block is designed to reduce radiated and structure-borne engine noise, as well as reduce weight. The high-pressure fuel rail and injectors are also isolated from the cylinder head to minimise the transmission of pulsing, while the fuel pump and fuel line are acoustically treated.

Another major contributor to refinement is the installation of a balancer shaft in the oil sump. Driven by a chain with inverted teeth for quiet running, the counter-rotating shaft spins at crankshaft speed and is carefully mass-optimized to offset the inherent vibrations from a three cylinder operation.

Other noise attenuation measures include: acoustically-optimized covers for the top and front of the engine, the intake manifold and camshaft housings; crankshaft isolation with iron main bearing inserts; inverted teeth for camshaft drive chains; a low-hiss turbo compressor; and a lower oil pan in steel.

As a result of these engineering features, the new 1.0 SIDI Turbo is not only more refined than other three-cylinder engines, but also quieter than many four-cylinder units. For example, in bench testing at full throttle, it emits lower noise levels across all engine speeds than similarly powerful gasoline turbos up to 1.6-litres displacement.  Its inherent refinement is so good, that the need for additional in-car sound insulation, or complex engine mountings and sub-frames, is significantly reduced.

Strong power and torque

The 1.0 SIDI Turbo also packs a punch, generating more torque than Vauxhall’s current 1.6-litre, naturally-aspirated engine, as well as the same 115PS maximum power output.

Jewel-like precision engineering is used in the integration of the exhaust manifold inside the aluminium cylinder head, which is bolted directly to the low-inertia, water-cooled turbocharger. This compact installation contributes to the delivery of a fast boost charge for strong, low-end power. Maximum torque of 166Nm from just 1,800 rpm is almost 30 per cent higher than the 1.6-litre engine generates at the same rpm.

The six-hole fuel injectors are centrally located above each piston to provide efficient combustion, and dual cam-phasing enables variable valve timing for optimum engine breathing. A twin displacement oil pump and a switchable water pump, which is disengaged when the engine coolant is cold in order to accelerate warm-up, also contribute to low fuel consumption.

 All-new, weight-saving six-speed gearbox

The 1.0 SIDI Turbo is mated to an all-new, six-speed manual gearbox specially designed for medium torque applications. With a dry weight of only 37kg, it is about 30 per cent lighter than its current counterpart. It is also extremely compact, measuring just 375mm along its axis.

Featuring superior shift quality, with a short lever travel and low shifting effort, the new transmission incorporates many of the refinements recently introduced on Vauxhall’s next-generation gearboxes. These include gears with wide, asymmetrically-cut dog teeth, and triple-cone synchronizers for first/second gear, with double cones for third/fourth. Reverse gear is also synchronized.

The new gearbox will be used in a broad range of small and sub-compact Vauxhall vehicles with engines rated at up to 220Nm torque. For optimum powertrain efficiency in each application, the matrix of gearing choices comprises 12 sets of gear ratios and seven final drives.

Next step in Vauxhall’s powertrain renewal program

The launch of the 1.0-litre SIDI Turbo and its new six-speed gearbox is the latest step in the renewal of Vauxhall’s powertrain portfolio, which will see three new engine families and 13 new engines introduced between 2012 and 2016, plus a host of new transmissions.

The program began with the launch of the first engines in new mid-size petrol and diesel families. These 1.6-litre turbo units are now joined by the 1.0-litre turbo, as the first example of new, small displacement engine family. All will be built at GM’s new Szentgotthard plant in Hungary, where petrol and diesel engines are produced on a shared assembly line.

New generation Vauxhall power plants are focused on meeting a growing customer demand for ‘downsized’ engines which are able to deliver reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, in combination with the power and refinement typical of larger displacement engines.

ADAM LINK MODELS GET WORLD-FIRST TALKING CAR TECH AS STANDARD
  • Optimal connectivity and stylish travel with innovative ADAM special models
  • IntelliLink infotainment system and Siri Eyes Free voice control as standard
  • Individual smartphone looks with black-white contrast
  • Union of ultra-modern technology and clear, technical design
Vauxhall’s ADAM Black Link and White Link special editions are on show for the first time at Frankfurt featuring innovative voice control technology.

With the clever IntelliLink infotainment system and Siri Eyes Free voice control as standard, these trendy black-white special models with smartphone-inspired looks will be the vehicle of choice for style-conscious A-sector customers.

Produced in a limit run of just 250 cars and following on from the Siri Eyes Free study on show at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, both ADAM Link models reflect typical smartphone looks in black or white, with accents in brushed aluminum.

“The ADAM Black Link and ADAM White Link models are like a sophisticated smartphone on wheels,” says Tina Müller, Opel Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “From the late fall, we will be offering them with our clever IntelliLink infotainment system and Siri Eyes Free voice control fitted as standard, in combination with a very special smartphone design. In an unconventional way, the ADAM combines innovative technologies with countless personalisation possibilities which are not available anywhere else to this extent. With these new models, our stylish city car once again shows that it is the best connected small car and a true individualization champion all wrapped up in one.”

ADAM drivers who have an iOS 6 – or later – compatible iPhone can comfortably and safely activate the Siri Eyes Free function via steering wheel controls and operate it with voice commands while keeping their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road.

Entertainment and navigation over Siri Eyes Free and Opel FlexDock

To activate Siri in Eyes Free mode, drivers connect their iPhone with IntelliLink via Bluetooth and then press the voice activation button on the steering wheel. Siri Eyes Free can be called up while other apps, such as BringGo Navigation, are running in the background. Music and navigation information is automatically muted during this time. The following functions are available with voice command over Siri Eyes Free:

Telephone calls to saved contacts
Play songs in the iTunes Library and switch between different music sources such as radio and iPod
Listen to, write and send an iMessage or text message to a telephone number or saved contact
Access calendar and add appointments
Siri Eyes Free also provides answers to questions about sports results or the dates of national holidays, for example. To minimize distraction from road traffic and increase safety, the iPhone screen remains dark.
Thanks to Siri Eyes Free, even navigation with Apple Maps is child’s play. Places, addresses and destinations can be entered verbally, without the driver having to look at the IntelliLink screen. The map is shown on the iPhone display mounted in the FlexDock. With the standard FlexDock smartphone set-up in the instrument panel in the ADAM Black Link and White Link, drivers have full access to Siri Eyes Free. In this way they can even ask how close they are to their destination. Another advantage of the FlexDock is that it automatically re-charges the iPhone it’s holding so the battery doesn’t deplete.

The Vauxhall IntelliLink infotainment system features a 7-inch color touchscreen and also includes the Tune-in app for global radio reception, the navigation app BringGo and Stitcher, an app for receiving internet radio podcasts from around the world. The infotainment system is also compatible with Android software-operated devices. This makes the ADAM the most user-friendly and cleverly connected small car on the market.

Ultra-modern technology in technically-inspired black-white design

Ultra-modern iPhone technology and design is mirrored in the looks of the special ADAM Black Link and White Link models. The ADAM comes in I’ll be Black or Saturday White Fever exterior colors. Accentuated contrasts to the rest of the body are provided by brushed, aluminum-look colored side mirror housings and the grille bar carrying the Vauxhall logo in the same look, as well as the tinted rear window and 18-inch wheels in a Twister design with matching wheel clips. An eye-catcher is also the black or white lacquered standard roof spoiler, as well as the characteristically shaped headlamps with LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights. The standard, crisp sport chassis provides lots of driving fun with its direct response.

Inside the cabin, the seats, instruments and applications continue the exterior colour scheme. In the ADAM Black Link, all occupants enjoy the comfort of OCIO Black Morrocana seat cushions. While the centre console and instrument panel are also black, the door trims, glove box, leather gear knob and handbrake handle are in contrasting bright white and technically-inspired Sky Cool Grey. The counterpart to all this is the White Link version, with its own color scheme: the seats are radiant in OCIO White Morrocana, just like elements in the instrument panel and center console.

First deliveries of ADAM Black Link and White Link will be early next year.

POWERFUL NEW VAUXHALL ENGINE TO DEBUT IN CASCADA
  • New high-performance 1.6 direct-injection turbo engine with up to 300Nm torque
  • Full-size convertible with 146mph top speed
  • Order books open in October with first deliveries in January 2014
With 200PS, 300Nm torque and a top speed of 146mph, a high-performance version of the new 1.6 SIDI turbo engine is to make its world premiere in a Vauxhall Cascada at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The engine is one of the newly-designed Vauxhall four-cylinder SIDI (Spark Ignition Direct Injection) units. It joins the existing 170PS 1.6 SIDI turbo fitted to the Cascada from its launch earlier this year.

“The completely new, even more powerful 1.6 SIDI turbo with 200PS debuting at Frankfurt makes our mid-size Cascada an extremely attractive offer to convertible buyers,” said Martin Vögler, Global Chief Engineer MGE Engines. “The new top-of-the-line petrol engine expands the Cascada powertrain portfolio with a high-output and torque champion, now putting two very powerful engines at the top of our petrol and diesel ranges – the SIDI turbo with 200PS and 300Nm torque as well as the BiTurbo CDTI with 195PS and 400Nm.”

More torque, more power

The new 200PS 1.6-litre SIDI turbo not only delivers 11 per cent more power, but also 300Nm maximum torque with overboost – 70Nm more than the comparable 1.6-litre turbo predecessor, an increase of 30 per cent. At the same time, the new engine with a power output per litre of 125PS is top-in-class in its competitive segment. With this the Cascada reaches a top speed of 146mph.

At the heart of the SIDI turbo is a new engine block that can withstand a maximum combustion pressure of up to 130 bar in the cylinder. The block is made of grey cast iron with an aluminum baseplate. In contrast to the 170PS version, a different type of piston was developed for the 200PS model and the compression ratio was reduced from 10.5 to 9.5:1. Vauxhall engineers also achieved a high power output with exceptional refinement by optimising the cars induction and exhaust systems. As a result, drivers and passengers will appreciate quiet and smooth idling, with an appealing sound quality even at high road speeds, engine speeds and loads. The exclusive HiPerStrut (High Performance Strut) front suspension further enhances these refined driving characteristics.

The new 1.6 SIDI turbo with 200PS completes the Cascada engine portfolio, with three petrol powertrains. It joins the 1.4 turbo 140PS as well as the 170PS 1.6-litre petrol direct injection unit. On the diesel side, the 2.0-litre turbo diesel with 165PS and the 195PS 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI are available.

The 200PS petrol direct injection unit is part of Vauxhall’s model and powertrain offensive. Within five years, the manufacturer will introduce 23 new models to the market.

Through 2016 Vauxhall will also introduce three completely new engine families and 13 new powertrains, renewing 80 per cent of its entire powertrain portfolio. The new 1.6 SIDI turbo downsized engines are distinguished by high power density as well as superb refinement combined with low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. At the same time, numerous ultra-modern manual and automatic transmissions are being introduced.

The Cascada 1.6 SIDI turbo with 200PS and six-speed manual transmission can be ordered from October.
